Is Waist Training Safe? Is Wearing a Corset Dangerous?
One of the questions I am constantly getting from my readers pertains to waist training, and if it is safe. Most of us who have been waist training prior to it becoming a “fad” or “trend” or a part of the “mainstream” know the perils of wearing a corset. A lot of these concerns stem from new articles that the media has been producing. I know if you’ve been reading my blog for a while you feel as if this type of post might be a step backwards, and that it isn’t catering to the loyal readers who have been here awhile but bear with me, it’s important that we are inclusive for everyone.
Lets get down to it!
Is Waist Training Safe? Is wearing a Corset Dangerous?
So far there have been no studies to prove that corseting isn’t safe. There is a lot of hearsay going around and a lot of articles being written claiming “The dangers of waist training” however; they are providing quotes from “Doctors” who have NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF. I find it laughable that otherwise reputable websites are running articles with NO FACTUAL EVIDENCE. Here is a few quotes from various articles, lets start with Ebony’s “The Dangers of Corset Training” article.
Director of Bariatric Surgery at the University of Florida Health Jacksonville, Sunil Sharma, MD says:
“All you’re doing is compressing your stomach and pushing the fat around instead of getting rid of it. It’s a very temporary thing,” he says. “Would you be able to obtain fat loss after taking it off? I doubt it.”
So let me get this straight… Dr. Sharma, first claims that all you are doing is “pushing the fat around” yet goes on to say “Would you be able to obtain fat loss after taking it off?” Those two statements contradict each other completely. Which is it Dr.Sharma? Are we pushing fat around or are we losing it?
Dr. Sharma then adds this gem:
“If you really want to achieve that look permanently then you’re best bet would be to do it surgically,” he concludes. “The corset won’t allow you to breathe properly and will only deteriorate your health instead of helping it.”
Dr. Sharma claims that a corset won’t allow you to breathe properly and will cause a deterioration of your health citing no studies and purely offering up an opinion. Dr. Sharma then goes on to push his agenda of opting for surgery. Dr. Sharma is a director of Bariatric SURGERY at the University of Florida who suggest getting SURGERY. Who say that coming!? Anything to make the billion dollar medical industry, bigger… I guess.
Ebony then decides to bring in Nicole Florence who is an MD and the Co-Director of Memorial Weight Loss and Wellness Center who says:
“There is no medical research that supports corset training as being a healthy way to lose weight”
So let me get this straight… someone who has a private company which specializes in weight loss is debunking a weight loss method that they don’t provide? I don’t see the bias in that at all! (That was sarcasm, if you didn’t catch it). The best part about this quote is that after claiming that there is no medical research that supports waist training, they provide NO MEDICAL RESEARCH that says waist training is dangerous.
The New York Daily News also wrote an article recently about waist training and claims its “Not so safe”. How long was the news article they pumped out? 214 words. Let me type that out, two hundred and fourteen words which was supposed to tell you “Waist training is Dangerous, Don’t.Do.It.” I’m not even going to waste my time responding to the quotes used in this one.
Finally, the last “Article” was done by Womens Health Mag in which MD Mary Jane Minkin from Yale claimed:
“Medically, it doesn’t make sense that cinching your waist tightly will make it permanently smaller. Once you take the garment off, your body will return to its usual shape. It’s also uncomfortable, restricts your movements, and if you wear it really tight, it can even make it difficult to breathe and theoretically could cause rib damage.”
Mary Jane says “It doesn’t make sense” Well Mary, a lot of things don’t make sense, and yet they are true. She also says that “once you take the Garment off your body WILL return to its usual shape”. This is debunked by the thousands of women who have altered their body through waist training. Finally Mary says “If you wear it really tight, it can make it difficult to breath and cause rib damage”. This is true, however; I could also hug someone “really tight” and cause the same problems. Nobody who waist trains suggests that you tight lace to the point of breathing issues.
The point I’m trying to get across here is that you can’t always believe what you read. I believe that you gals are smart enough to figure out the agenda that “Medical Professionals” like to push but I can’t resist the temptation of sitting down and ripping their theories to shreds. Waist training has been going on for centuries and no studies have come out to prove its dangerous. Corsetry is getting a lot of negative press because “news outlets” these days are driven by the amount of traffic they receive or the amount of clicks they get. If you include a picture of any celebrity in a waist trainer and accompany their name by the words “Dangerous” or “Not Safe” you’re guaranteed to get a boatload of traffic. I’m tired of the poor journalism and click bait articles that the internet has become dominated by. So what do you guys think? The people who actually dawn corsets and waist train?
